What's Happening To Women's Happiness? by Marcus Buckingham, September 17, 2009
I can't provide a whole lot of insight since I am relatively happy, and I'm a sample size of one. Beware articles in the media which attempt to interpret stats. This study has been widely reported and just as widely misrepresented. It's worth reading this post by Language Log, which calls out the General Social Surveys specifically (the same one the article you linked to is based on).
Good to hear from you, Nigel. I agree that the research seems fishy, but I didn't read your link yet. Most obvious to me is that happiness is subjective, and if women are getting more education as the research finds, they are also becoming more aware of what is possible. They may not feel any different, but their understanding of where they fall on the continum of feelings is different than in the past.
